Arizona has third-highest number of pedestrian deaths in U.S.

If you drive anywhere in the Phoenix metro area, you will see a lot of people walking close to very busy streets. Motorists and pedestrians both have an obligation to take steps to improve roadway safety, but unfortunately, there is much work that needs to be done.

A recent report by the Governor's Highway Safety Association revealed that Arizona had the third-most pedestrian deaths, based on the number of pedestrian accidents compared to the state's population. This increase mirrors a trend that is happening nationwide, where the number of deaths has risen to its highest levels in over two decades.

What are the causes for the increase in pedestrian deaths?

Officials in Arizona feel that there are several different reasons for the high number of pedestrian deaths within the state. In some situations, it is believed that the pedestrians are paying too much attention to their cellphones instead of traffic when they are walking across roads. The pedestrians do not hear or see approaching vehicles because of the distraction, leading to unfortunate accidents.

Motorists also shoulder some responsibility for the number of these accidents. Many drivers are speeding to beat red lights and do not see pedestrians waiting to cross. Additionally, motorists themselves are engaging in distracted driving behaviors. They are checking their cellphones while driving, and taking their eyes off of the road.

Because of the large number of these crashes, the state has received grant money to put toward making streets safer. Some of the money will be used to increase law enforcement efforts at the most dangerous intersections.

What should you do if you have been injured in a pedestrian accident

If you or a loved one has seriously been injured while walking or bicycling on Phoenix area streets, you should contact an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible to discuss your potential claim. Your attorney will want to be able to investigate the scene of the accident, and this can be much more difficult if an extensive amount of time has passed.

Once you have received medical treatment, you need to understand how important it is to begin the process of preparing your claim, especially if your injuries will keep you out of work. The more thorough your attorney can be in these initial stages the better the chance that you will be successful with your case.
